Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world, with over 75% of its citizens under the age of 30. While this presents tremendous national potential, it also places significant pressure on the education system. More than 2 million children in Uganda remain out of school, and many others who enroll drop out early due to poverty, lack of scholastic materials, child labor, teenage pregnancy, and family instability.

Reportedly, children in Uganda complete only six years of effective learning on average, limiting long-term economic opportunity and national productivity.

For vulnerable and street-connected children, access to education is even more fragile. Without intentional intervention, many remain trapped in cycles of poverty, unemployment, and social exclusion.

At M-LISADA, we believe education is the most powerful tool for lasting transformation.

For nearly three decades, we have restored access to learning and equipped vulnerable children and youth with practical skills that foster independence, dignity, and self-reliance.

WHAT WE DO

Education Sponsorship

Education is the cornerstone of transformation at M-LISADA. It is the most powerful tool we use to rehabilitate, heal, and empower the vulnerable children and youth under our care. We understand that true education goes beyond classroom instruction. It shapes attitudes, builds character, develops knowledge, and equips young people with practical skills for life.

Guided by Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Quality Education, we have structured a comprehensive sponsorship pathway that supports children at every stage of their educational journey. Our approach is holistic, recognizing that many of the children we serve have experienced trauma, disruption, and significant learning loss. Education for them must restore confidence and social identity as much as it builds competence.

For children who have never attended school or who dropped out early, we provide a one-year Bridge Education Program. This foundational program helps close severe learning gaps while preparing children emotionally and socially for mainstream schooling.

Beyond literacy and numeracy, the program focuses on attitude change, character formation, and rebuilding a child’s enthusiasm for learning. Through healing sessions, reflection, music, and cultural education, children regain confidence and rediscover their potential. By the end of the program, they are academically prepared, socially adjusted, and ready to transition into formal education with dignity and hope.

Primary education in Uganda is a seven-year cycle that forms the backbone of lifelong learning. Most of the children we serve fall within this foundational level. We believe that successfully completing primary school significantly improves a child’s long-term educational and economic prospects.

Through sponsorship, we ensure that children have access to tuition, scholastic materials, uniforms, mentorship, and continuous academic monitoring. We walk alongside them during these formative years, strengthening their confidence and setting them on a path toward higher achievement.

Secondary education expands opportunities and lays the groundwork for specialization and advanced training. Despite difficult backgrounds, many of our children demonstrate remarkable determination and commitment to their studies. Their resilience inspires us daily.

We remain committed to supporting our children through this critical phase because secondary education strengthens employability, competitiveness, and readiness for tertiary or university pathways. It ensures that their potential is not limited by their past circumstances.

Not every child thrives in a purely academic setting, particularly those who have experienced prolonged educational disruption. Many of our youth are older than their classmates due to years lost on the streets or outside school systems. For them, vocational and technical training provides a practical and dignified pathway to independence.

Through hands-on training in employable trades and entrepreneurship, young people acquire skills that generate income and foster self-reliance. Vocational education delivers immediate impact, enabling youth to transition more quickly into productive livelihoods while restoring their sense of purpose.

Tertiary education offers specialized career-focused training that increases employability and economic mobility. At this level, students pursue diploma and certificate programs aligned with labor market needs. These pathways often provide quicker returns and smoother transitions into stable employment or self-sustaining enterprise.

We encourage eligible youth to pursue these opportunities, knowing that technical competence is a powerful driver of long-term empowerment.
