Strengthening Families. Building Resilient Communities.

M-LISADA’s Community Empowerment Program extends our mission beyond individual child rehabilitation into the wider community. We believe that sustainable transformation happens not only when a child is supported, but when families and communities are strengthened alongside them.

Our work is deeply rooted in the underserved community of Katwe, one of Kampala’s densely populated informal settlements. Here, families face multiple vulnerabilities including poverty, food insecurity, unemployment, poor sanitation, domestic violence, environmental risks, and limited access to reliable information.

The Community Empowerment Program was designed to expand M-LISADA’s reach and influence by equipping parents, caregivers, community mobilizers, local leaders, and children with knowledge, skills, and practical solutions that improve quality of life.

We do not impose solutions. We build ownership.

Community members take responsibility for shared meeting spaces where learning, dialogue, and action take place. Through structured engagement, we have strengthened local child protection systems, improved reporting of abuse and neglect cases, and contributed to a significant positive shift in parental attitudes toward children’s rights and wellbeing.

Areas of Intervention

Our program addresses the interconnected challenges that influence long-term resilience and stability.

Self-Help Groups & Economic Strengthening

Self-help groups empower members to support one another socially and economically. These groups address domestic violence, promote micro-savings and internal lending, encourage small enterprise development, and strengthen financial management skills.

Through collective savings initiatives, families are able to set aside funds for children’s education and household emergencies, reducing vulnerability and dependence.

When families are financially stable, children are more likely to remain in school and protected from exploitation.

Food insecurity remains a major challenge in informal settlements like Katwe. Many families struggle to afford balanced meals, contributing to malnutrition and poor health outcomes.

Through conservation agriculture and backyard farming training, families learn how to grow vegetables creatively in small urban spaces. This improves household nutrition, reduces food costs, and promotes healthier diets.

In partnership with organizations such as InterKultura, tree planting and greening initiatives have also contributed to environmental restoration within the community.

Low-income urban communities are highly vulnerable to environmental disasters, particularly flooding and storm-related structural damage. Despite frequent flooding, many residents lack disaster preparedness knowledge.

M-LISADA provides environmental education focused on climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and flood preparedness. We mobilize Environmental Scouts — school-based youth clubs equipped with design-thinking skills to identify and respond to climate and environmental challenges in their communities.

These scouts work alongside community members to promote waste management, recycling, reforestation, sanitation, and improved drainage systems.

Community knowledge plays a central role. Residents identify flood-prone areas and infrastructure gaps, while M-LISADA connects them with partner organizations invested in climate action and sustainable development.

Poor sanitation and contaminated water sources are major contributors to disease in low-income communities.

M-LISADA organizes regular community clean-up campaigns and partners with local authorities, including the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), to promote education on solid and liquid waste management.

We also link community leaders to available grants and support systems that provide access to safe water and improved sanitation infrastructure.

Improved hygiene practices have led to healthier households and reduced preventable illnesses.
